Window and Door Rebates in Chilliwack

Chilliwack has more detached houses per household than most BC cities, which means many windows to replace. The rebate stops at 20 openings, so a large house can hit the cap quickly.

A Chilliwack farmhouse

A farmhouse with 18 windows and 3 exterior doors is 21 openings, one over the cap. The rebate is $2,000. The barn and shop windows earn nothing, because outbuildings are not eligible.

Chilliwack's homes in numbers

The 2021 Census counted 35,760 households in Chilliwack. Detached houses are 54% of households, and 72% own. About 12,080 (34%) live in homes built before 1981, and 6,495 are owner-occupied detached houses from that period. Only 21% live in apartments.

Farm lots and the 12-month rule

The program covers the home, not barns, garages, workshops or outbuildings. The home must be at least 12 months old and a year-round primary residence. A farmhouse with a separate suite can qualify when each part has its own meter.

Weather

Chilliwack's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was 0.2°C and the coldest day was -17.5°C. Winters are wet and mild with a few sharp cold snaps. Condensation on old glass is a common complaint, and a low-U window helps.

Counting openings and certification

Each rough opening counts as one. A bay window is one. Skylights are excluded. Units need a U-factor of 1.22 W/m2-K or lower and a listing from CSA, Intertek, Labtest, QAI or NFRC.

Reading a U-factor label

The rebate needs a U-factor of 1.22 W/m2-K or lower, and lower means less heat loss. Many window labels show the older imperial scale instead. To convert, multiply the imperial number by 5.678. A label that says U-0.30 equals 1.70 W/m2-K, which is too high. A label that says U-0.21 equals about 1.19 W/m2-K and passes. Ask the contractor to quote the metric value for each model so you do not have to convert.

Stacking a second upgrade

BC Hydro pays a bonus of up to $2,000 when you finish more than one eligible upgrade, but its page does not give a formula, so ask when you apply. FortisBC lists a $300 second-upgrade bonus or an EnerGuide improvement bonus of $750 to $2,000. Windows pair naturally with insulation, since both cut heat loss through the building envelope.

Use BC Hydro's consumer guide

BC Hydro publishes a consumer guide for window and door replacement. It covers frame materials, glazing types and what to ask a contractor. Read it before you take quotes, so you can compare units on the same terms. The program only checks the U-factor, certification and installation rules, so the other choices are yours.

If your income is lower

BC Hydro sends income-qualified customers to the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program instead, and the two cannot be combined. The 2026 program document lists no insulation or window rebates, so the free Energy Conservation Assistance Program is the route to ask about.

How to claim in Chilliwack

  1. Check the home is electric-heated and a primary residence.
  2. Get quotes that list the U-factor of each unit.
  3. Photograph each label on installation day.
  4. Keep the invoice and apply within six months.
  5. Add insulation to the same application to check the bonus.
