The short answer
In Calgary you pay for a smart thermostat yourself. The income-based upgrade program is the one place a Calgary household may get one at no cost, and the city's loan program is the one place financing may be available later.
Why Calgary has no thermostat rebate
Alberta does not have a province-wide home energy rebate like BC Hydro's. Programs here come from cities and utilities, and each decides what to pay for. Edmonton's utility is testing a thermostat program. Red Deer pays $50. Calgary has put its money into financing and free upgrades for lower-income homes instead. The programs we track list nothing for a thermostat alone.
Cold weather and your furnace
Calgary's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was -11.9°C, and the coldest reading was -39.4°C. A thermostat does not make heat; it decides when the furnace runs. The savings come from scheduling lower temperatures when nobody is home and warming the house before you wake up. Savings depend on your habits and your home, so ignore any promise of an exact percentage.
Check what you heat with before you buy. A forced-air furnace uses a low-voltage thermostat, and most smart models fit. Electric baseboard heaters use a different, line-voltage kind, and many standard smart thermostats cannot run them.
Calgary homes and who can act
Statistics Canada's 2021 Census counts about 502,000 households in Calgary. About 55% live in a single detached house, and about 69% own. Owners can pick and install a thermostat without asking anyone. Renters should ask the landlord before swapping the wall unit, and keep the old one to put back when they move out.
The free upgrade program
The Calgary Home Upgrades Program is run for the City by Kambo Energy Group. It pays for upgrades at no cost to qualifying homes: a detached home, duplex or townhome built before 1998, with your name on the utility bill, and a household income under the limit. The pre-tax limit is $52,884 for one person, $65,836 for two, and $98,269 for four. The City's page names lighting, insulation and efficient furnaces as examples, and does not list a thermostat. Ask them what is included when you apply.
Financing through the City
Calgary's Clean Energy Improvement Program lends up to $50,000, up to 100% of the project cost, repaid on your property tax bill over up to 20 years. The estimated rate is 6.00% to 6.10%. It is meant for big projects like heat pumps or insulation, and it is closed to new applications until winter 2026/2027. A thermostat alone is too small a job to finance.
If you want a heat pump later
If a heat pump is in your plans, pick a thermostat that works with one, or let your installer supply it. Some heat pump systems need a thermostat from the same maker. See our Calgary heat pump page before you spend on a thermostat you may swap.
What to do in Calgary
- Check whether your home heats with a furnace or electric baseboards.
- See if your household income is under the Calgary Home Upgrades limits, and apply if so.
- Compare models in our thermostat guide, and check they work with your system.
- Buy it and keep the receipt in case a program opens later.
- Check the City of Calgary's page in winter 2026/2027 for CEIP intake.
Common questions
Is there a smart thermostat rebate in Calgary in 2026?
No. The programs we track list no thermostat rebate from the City of Calgary or the province.
Which Alberta cities pay a thermostat rebate?
Red Deer pays $50 to its residents. EPCOR's Peak Rewards pilot pays Edmonton households $50 and $25 a season if they have central air conditioning.
Can I get a free thermostat in Calgary?
Possibly. The Calgary Home Upgrades Program gives free upgrades to lower-income households, but its page does not name thermostats. Ask what is included.
Will a smart thermostat work with electric baseboard heat?
Often not. Baseboard heaters use line-voltage thermostats, and many smart models are low-voltage only. Check the model's wiring before you buy.
Will the City's loan program pay for a thermostat?
It is meant for larger projects, and it is closed to new applications until winter 2026/2027.
