BC Water Heater Guide 2026: Tank, Tankless, Heat Pump
Short answer: Only heat pump water heaters get the main BC rebates. BC Hydro pays up to $1,000 when you replace an electric water heater (FortisBC pays $1,000 in its electric areas). Income-qualified homes can get up to $3,500 through CleanBC. Standard tanks and tankless units don't get these rebates.

Rebate rules
- The unit must be Tier 2 or higher on NEEA's Advanced Water Heater Specification list.
- BC Hydro and FortisBC: must replace an existing electric storage tank that is your primary water heater; licensed contractor; apply within six months.
- CleanBC (income-qualified): $3,500 from fossil fuel at any level; from electric, $3,500 at Level 1 and $2,800 at Level 2.
Is it worth it?
If you have an electric tank, usually yes: a heat pump water heater uses much less electricity for the same hot water. Get quotes and ask where it will go, because it needs space around it.
