Vermont Heat Pump Rebates in 2026: What Efficiency Vermont Pays

Vermont pays up to $475 for a ductless heat pump and up to $2,200 for a ducted one. Income-qualified households get a bonus on top, and Green Mountain Power adds $2,000 for some of its customers. The federal tax credit ended on December 31, 2025, so these state and utility rebates are now the main help.

What Vermont pays for a heat pump

Almost every home efficiency rebate in Vermont runs through one nonprofit, Efficiency Vermont. You do not pick a utility first. For a heat pump the rebate depends on the type of system:

  • Ductless (mini-split): up to $475.
  • Ducted (central): up to $2,200.
  • Heat pump water heater: $600, or $1,000 if your income qualifies (official page).

The equipment must be cold-climate rated and on Efficiency Vermont's qualified list, and you must be a Vermont electric customer. Ask your installer to confirm the exact model before you sign, because a heat pump that is not on the list gets nothing.

The income bonus and Green Mountain Power

Households under the income limits get an extra $200 to $2,200 on top of the base rebate, depending on the system (income limits took effect July 1, 2026). Green Mountain Power customers at or below 80% of area median income can also get $2,000 for a heat pump (GMP rebate page).

If your household might qualify, apply for the income-based amount first. It is worth more than the base rebate on a ducted system.

How to claim

  1. Check that your heat pump model is on the qualified list before you buy.
  2. Get quotes from two or three installers and ask each one which Efficiency Vermont rebate applies.
  3. Keep your invoice and the model and serial numbers once the system is installed.
  4. Apply on the Efficiency Vermont rebate page, and apply for any income-based or utility rebate separately.

Rebate amounts and funding can change during the year, so confirm the current number on the official page before you commit. We last checked these figures in October 2026.

Other Vermont rebates worth stacking

Weatherization pays up to $3,000, or up to $7,000 if you are income-eligible, when you use an Efficiency Excellence Network contractor (official page). Sealing and insulating before you size a heat pump often means you can buy a smaller system. Vermont Gas weatherization projects must be finished by December 31, 2026. Our guides cover appliances and thermostats, home batteries and windows and doors.

Amounts come from the Efficiency Vermont and Green Mountain Power program pages linked above, checked in October 2026. We are not affiliated with either program.
