How much is the heat pump rebates in Syracuse?
Amounts for a single-family home. You get one line from this table, not several.
| What you install | Standard | In a Disadvantaged Community |
|---|---|---|
| Category 2 air-source, no decommissioning | $4,000 | $6,000 |
| Category 2 air-source, Weatherized Tier | $8,000 | $10,000 |
| Category 2b, old system removed | $7,000 | $9,000 |
| Category 2b, Weatherized Tier | $12,000 | $14,000 |
| Partial to full load | $4,000 | $4,000 |
| Ground-source retrofit (Weatherized Tier $23,000 / $28,000) | $18,000 | $23,000 |
| Heat pump water heater (retail) | $1,250 | $1,250 |
Apartments and homes under 1,000 sq ft get about half these amounts. The Weatherized Tier (from September 1, 2026) applies to homes built after 2010, homes that took part in an approved weatherization program, or homes that pass a heating-load test. National Grid’s own web page still showed the older “up to $12,000” on October 3, 2026. Your participating contractor applies for you.
Heat pump: NYS Clean Heat (run by National Grid)
Best case for a whole-home system; most homes get less, as the table shows.
What makes Syracuse different
National Grid supplies both electricity and gas in Syracuse. It is one of the snowiest cities in the US, so a cold-climate heat pump with a backup plan for the coldest nights is the usual design.
Syracuse gets some of the heaviest snow of any US city, and many homes are older two-family houses and bungalows near the university and downtown. Cold-climate sizing and good snow clearance for the outdoor unit matter more here than in most places.
Because National Grid supplies both gas and electricity in Syracuse, you will see both sides of the bill change after a switch. Removing the gas furnace entirely earns the larger “with decommissioning” amount, but only do that if the heat pump is sized for the coldest days.
Parts of the city are Disadvantaged Communities, which raises the National Grid amounts — check your address.
What does not stack
Clean Heat is the National Grid rebate, so never add the two together. Clean Heat is capped at 70% of cost (85% in a DAC). There is no separate federal HEAR cheque — New York delivers it through EmPower+. The federal 25C/25D tax credits ended December 31, 2025.
Income-qualified? EmPower+ can cover far more than the utility rebate. Check the state DAC map too — it can raise your amount.
What to do next in Syracuse
- Ask for a room-by-room load calculation (Manual J), not a rule-of-thumb size.
- Check your address on the DAC map — many Syracuse neighbourhoods qualify.
- Get 2–3 quotes and ask each contractor to show the rebate tier on the quote.

Common questions
How much is the heat pump rebate in Syracuse?
NYS Clean Heat (run by National Grid) pays up to $14,000 (Disadvantaged Community, Weatherized Tier, old system removed) for a whole-home heat pump in Syracuse, depending on home size, whether you remove the old system, and DAC status.
Will a heat pump keep up in a Syracuse winter?
A cold-climate model sized with a proper load calculation can, and Clean Heat requires cold-climate equipment. Many homeowners keep a backup for the coldest nights, which usually puts them on the partial-load rebate instead of the full-load one.
Is the federal tax credit still available for heat pumps?
No. The federal 25C and 25D credits ended for anything installed after December 31, 2025.
