Illinois Heating Help 2026-27: LIHEAP Dates and How to Apply

Illinois started taking LIHEAP applications on October 1, 2026 for some households, and opens to everyone else on November 1. The state is running it in two steps, so the date that matters depends on who lives in your home. Here is the plan and what to do first.

What we found for Illinois heating help

Each card names the official page we read on October 21, 2026. Dollar amounts are the state's own; anything it does not publish, we do not show.

Open

LIHEAP, priority groups

Open Oct 1, 2026

Adults 60 and older, people with a disability, families with a child 5 or younger, and households that are disconnected, have a disconnect date within 7 days, or have less than 25% left in a propane tank.

Open

LIHEAP, all other eligible households

Opens Nov 1, 2026

Everyone else who meets the income rules can start applying on November 1, 2026. The local agency confirms eligibility and sets your benefit amount.

Two start dates

The state started with households most at risk. If anyone in your home is 60 or older, has a disability, or is 5 or younger, you could apply from October 1, 2026. So could a household that has been disconnected, has a disconnect date within seven days, or has under a quarter of a propane tank left. Everyone else who meets the income rules waits until November 1, 2026.

How to apply

Go to helpillinoisfamilies.com during your application month and fill out the online Request for Services form. That form starts the process, but it is not the full application. Your local agency will email or call you to check your eligibility and set your benefit. If you hear nothing in about three weeks, contact the county agency directly. The call center is 1-833-711-0374.

If you have a shut-off notice

Do not use the online form alone. If you have a disconnect notice with a date, or you are already disconnected from gas or electric heat, call your county agency directly. The state says disconnected households need to work with the agency, not wait for a form reply.

New bill discounts

The state also describes new monthly discounts on gas bills for income-eligible LIHEAP customers of Ameren Illinois, ComEd, Nicor Gas, North Shore Gas and Peoples Gas. From October 1, 2026, Ameren starts an Electric Service Discount Program where your payment is based on a share of your income. Households who do not qualify for LIHEAP may still qualify for the discounts. Ask your utility.

Watch for scams

The state warns that fake notices of award are going around. LIHEAP does not charge a fee. If someone asks for money to get you a LIHEAP grant, hang up and do not pay.

What we did not read

The page we read does not give dollar benefit amounts, because the local agency sets them. It also does not list the income table in the part we read. Use the state page for those details.

Rent, ownership and landlords

The state describes LIHEAP as help for income-eligible households, and the local agency checks your situation. Tell the agency if your heat is paid through your rent. That affects which paperwork they ask for and who gets the payment. Do not assume you are out because you do not hold a utility account.

Know your month

The state asks you to use the online form during your application month. This is why the two start dates matter: if you fill out the form too early, you may be told to try again later. Mark October 1 or November 1 on your calendar, depending on who lives in your home, and send the form that day.

What to do in Illinois this winter

  1. Find out if your household is in a priority group.
  2. Go to helpillinoisfamilies.com and send the Request for Services form in your month.
  3. If you have a shut-off date, call your county agency right away.
  4. Wait for the agency to email or call, and follow up after three weeks.
  5. Ask your utility about the new bill discounts too.

Fill out the Request for Services form at helpillinoisfamilies.com, then wait for your local agency to contact you. You can also apply directly through your local agency.
