"Solar payback is 15 years, isn't that a scam?" I hear this all the time. Usually it's from someone who got a quote that looked expensive, or read something scary on Reddit. It's a fair question. Let me actually run the math instead of just saying "trust me."
The real math, city by city
Payback time depends on three things: how much sun your city gets, what you pay per kWh, and how big your rebate is. In BC, the BC Hydro rebate is $1,000 per kW up to $5,000 (and no more than 50% of cost). Since July 1, 2026, power you export earns 10 cents per kWh, so the value is mostly in the power you use yourself. Payback depends on your roof, your use and your quote; ask each installer to show the math with your own bills.
- Sunnier Interior cities (like Kamloops) usually produce more per panel than cloudier coastal ones.
- Kelowna is on FortisBC, so BC Hydro's solar rebate doesn't apply there.
- Coastal cities get more winter cloud, so size carefully.
What actually makes payback longer than advertised
When people get burned, it's usually one of these three things, not the technology itself:
- An unapproved battery. Install a Tesla Powerwall in BC and you lose the entire $5,000 battery rebate. Tesla products have been ineligible since March 12, 2025.
- Skipping Peak Saver enrollment. For a battery, it's the difference between a $5,000 and $1,500 rebate, and you must enroll within 14 days of in-service. Not enrolling leaves real money on the table for no reason.
- An oversized system. Some installers size systems bigger than your roof or usage needs to hit a bigger sale. Bigger isn't always better — it just means a bigger loan.
When solar does NOT make sense: if you're planning to sell your home in the next 2–3 years, if your roof needs replacement soon (do that first), or if you get heavy shade for most of the day. We'd rather tell you this now than have an installer tell you otherwise later.
The honest bottom line
With the BC Hydro rebate, Peak Saver rewards, and lower monthly bills stacked together, most BC homeowners see $18,000–$22,000 in total value over 10 years on a system that costs $25,000–$40,000 installed. That's real, it's math you can check yourself, and it's very different from a system with no rebate attached.
