Renting or living in a condo in Newton? Here's what applies to you
Most of the rebate figures above assume you own a single-family home and control the whole building. That's not every Newton household. Here's what changes if you rent or own a condo unit:
- If you rent: The structural rebates (heat pump, insulation, windows, solar) go to whoever owns the property, not you. A free smart thermostat installed during a home energy assessment is often still available to renters — ask when you book. For the bigger upgrades, point your landlord to this page.
- If you own a condo unit: In-unit upgrades you control yourself, like a heat pump water heater or an in-suite heat pump, may still qualify for the rebates above, usually with your building's approval for anything touching shared systems or exterior walls.
- If it's a whole-building retrofit: Heat pumps, insulation, and solar for an entire condo or multi-family building go through a separate Mass Save multi-unit program rather than the single-family numbers above. Your condo board or property manager applies, not individual owners.
