⚠️ Both federal programs are now closed
The Canada Greener Homes Grant (up to $5,000) stopped taking new applications in February 2024. The Canada Greener Homes Loan (interest-free, up to $40,000) closed to new applications on October 2, 2025. If a website, installer, or ad still promises you "$40,000 from Greener Homes," it's out of date.
We're updating this page because the old version — like a lot of the internet — described a program that no longer accepts applications. Here's the accurate picture for 2026, and more importantly, where the money actually is now.
What happened
- The Grant gave up to $5,000 back for retrofits after pre- and post-EnerGuide evaluations. It closed to new applicants in early 2024 once funding was committed.
- The Loan offered up to $40,000 interest-free over 10 years. That's the "$40,000" number everyone remembers — but it was a loan you repay, not free money, and it closed on October 2, 2025.
- If you were already approved for either, you keep your funding. This only affects new applications.
What replaced it: the Greener Homes Affordability Program
In its place, the federal government launched the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP) — an $800-million initiative, but with a narrower focus: low-to-median income households. It's a grant (not a loan), covering insulation, heat pumps, windows and solar.
The key difference for BC
CGHAP is delivered through each province. In BC, that means it flows through the same CleanBC / BetterHomes income-qualified channels you'd apply to anyway — you don't chase a separate federal form. If you qualify by income, it's already part of what your home evaluation checks.
So where's the money in 2026? (This part is good news)
Losing the federal grant sounds bad, but for most BC homeowners the provincial and utility programs are larger and still wide open:

For a lower-income household, the provincial heat pump and income-qualified programs can now deliver more real value than the old federal grant did — and unlike the loan, you don't pay it back.
